BelGaN in Belgium has received a number of bids for its gallium nitride (GaN) fab that fell into bankruptcy last month.

Onsemi’s Belgian GaN spinout bankrupt

A Swedish-Finnish consortium has made a bid for the company under the name 7 Semiconductors Oy, based in Helsinki.

“We have been working for almost three years for Sweden to regain leadership in the semiconductor area. The original plan was to build a semiconductor factory here, but then we started discussing with Belgium” said Gerard de Bourbon at venture capital company Spirit Ventures, one of the backers.

“We first wrote a letter of intent, and today we have made an offer for Belgium.” A deal is expected to be around SEK1.5bn (€130m).

The previous owners of the plant are also reported to be interested in buying the 6in ad 8in fabs, and there is an offer from the Belgian entrepreneur Guido Dumarey, and the bid amounts have not been disclosed.

The plant started as MIETEC in 1983 before it was acquired by Alcatel then AMI, and sold to onsemi in 2008, it started GaN development in 2009. Onsemi looked to sell the silicon fab as part of its restructuring, but spun it out to BelGan as a GaN foundry in 2022 with Chinese backing.
