Biometric EMV card for contactless payments
The new card will use fingerprint recognition technology in place of a PIN code to authenticate the cardholder. The card will be designed to be compatible with the existing Cypriot banking terminals and will ensure privacy is protected by avoiding the transmission of biometric information and by a secure enrolment process that is undertaken at the Bank’s branches. When a fingerprint reading is taken by the sensor, the comparison is performed between the scanned fingerprint and data stored on the card, keeping the customer’s biometric information secure.
The card, which will be powered by the terminal and therefore requires no batteries, will be used to authenticate high value transactions.
