The company has invested in next generation battery technology through its German subsidiary Blackstone Technology GmbH. This includes patented 3D printing techniques and research into the mass production of batteries with proven higher energy density and higher number of charge cycles.

Blackstone Technology’s 3D printing process offers significant advantages over conventional battery cell designs that use liquid electrolytes. These include:

  • significantly lower costs.
  • greater production flexibility in terms of cell format.
  • a 20% increase in energy density.

In addition, by using this technology, the proportion of materials that do not store energy, such as copper and aluminium, has been reduced by up to 10%. These advantages can be achieved regardless of the electrode chemistry.

Once this technology has been developed and tested, the company considers itself ready for the next step. In order to achieve the highest efficiency and leverage of this 3D printing technology, the company plans to manufacture 3D-printed solid-state battery cells.

This is a critical step in the development of solid-state batteries.  An automated 3D printing production process can save up to 70% of the traditional investment in solid state battery manufacturing. Solid state batteries are also considered to be more robust and safer.

The first battery prototypes developed by Blackstone Technology GmbH have already been tested. The company is now developing the 3D printing technology required for printing solid state battery cells for mass production.

Holger Gritzka, Managing Director of Blackstone Technology GmbH, comments: “Together with our previous developments in 3D printing battery technology, this development paves the way for the mass production of lithium solid state battery cells. In addition to major markets such as the automotive industry, marine applications and new 5G wireless networks would also benefit from the advantages that 3D printed solid state cells can offer”.
