Blue semiconductor laser diodes focus on automotive HUDs
Semiconductor laser diodes offer high luminance and excellent color reproducibility. By replacing LEDs, which are currently the most common light sources for automotive HUD systems, with semiconductor LDs, the company believes HUD systems will produce a larger head-up display field of view and lower energy consumption. The systems will provide a higher contrast and an extended range of reproducible colors
Nichia claims to have achieved improved reliability and quality for the new LD models. A φ5.6 mm Can package (metal package) has been selected for the high performance semiconductor LD packages and the LD die claims an improved conversion efficiency from electric power to light.
Nichia plans to start shipping test samples from October 2014 and mass production from October, 2015.
