Intel has presented detailed plans for its Magdeburg wafer fabs to the German authorities and these are now publicly available, according to Heisse.de.

The filing was related to environmental and emissions planning consent and made to the Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV), Heisse said. The plans come in a 450Mbyte zipped folder.

As previously announced, Intel plans to build two fabs – Fab 29.1 and Fab 29.2 – at a cost of about US$30 billion at Eulenberg, near Magdeburg. The plans indicate an operational start date of 4Q27, although that could be delayed (see Intel increases its bid for German fabs). However, the detailed architectural plans suggest that construction need not present a block to execution.

Heisse.de said the plans reveal the street on which fabs 29.1 and 29.2 are to be located will be called Ada-Lovelace-Chaussee after Ada King-Noel, Countess of Lovelace, the English 19th century mathematician famous for her work on Charles Babbage’s mechanical Analytical Engine.

The Magdeburg fabs will be capable of receiving high-NA extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment from ASML Holding NV although as the timing of construction is unclear so is the initial manufacturing process technologies that will be inserted into Magdeburg.

The Intel 14 angstrom manufacturing process 14A uses high-NA EUV with backside power via connections and the same RibbonFET devices as 18A. It is planned to enter production in 2026 with an extended version with more features, 14A-E, planned for 2027. The 10A process should follow well before the end of the decade.

The Magdeburg campus is of a size that it could house up to six more fab modules of the same size as Fab 29.1 or 29.2.
