Bluetooth 5.2 SoCs provide ten-year life from coin cell batteries

By eeNews Europe

An expansion of Silicon Labs’ Wireless Gecko Series 2 family, the EFR32BG22 (BG22) SoCs provide developers with a Bluetooth connectivity solution that supports the Bluetooth 5.2 specification, Bluetooth direction finding and Bluetooth mesh. Silicon Labs designed the BG22 SoCs to meet the requirements of the billions of Bluetooth-enabled IoT devices forecast to arrive in the next few years.

The BG22 family combines ultra-low transmit 3.6 mA TX at 0 dBm) and receive power (2.6 mA RX) with a high-performance, low-power Arm Cortex-M33 core (27 µA/MHz active, 1.2 µA sleep) to provide energy efficiency that that is able to prolong coin cell battery life to up to a decade.

There are three Bluetooth SoC products in the family which have been developed to address a range of price/performance requirements.

• EFR32BG22C112 is designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive applications. It provides access to 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps Bluetooth PHYs, along with a 38.4 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 core, 18 GPIOs and 352 kB flash with radio characteristics of 0 dBm transmit (TX) and -99 dBm receive (RX) (1M PHY) sensitivity.

• EFR32BG22C222 SoC provides more compute power with a 76.8 MHz M33 core, 26 GPIOs and higher TX power (+6 dBm).

• EFR32BG22C224 has IQ sampling for direction finding applications and access to 125 kB and 500 kB Bluetooth LE Coded PHYs, which that can increase RX sensitivity to -106 dBm. The SoC has a higher operating temperature of +125oC and provides up to 512 kB flash to support applications requiring direction finding or low-power mesh nodes.

BG22 SoCs provide a high level of security through Silicon Labs’ Secure Boot with Root of Trust and Secure Loader capability. The SoCs also provide comprehensive failure analysis by allowing developers to investigate problems without erasing flash since the software itself may be part of the root cause. Developers achieve this through Silicon Labs’ Secure Debug with lock/unlock cryptographic capability.
