Bluetooth beacon triples battery life

hard&softWERK in Germany has developed a Bluetooth beacon that triples the battery life.

The blukii Bluetooth beacon uses the low power ATM33 system on chip from Atmosic Technologies to reduce the current consumption and boost the battery life.

The beacon runs with an idle current consumption below 1µA and active transmit peak current consumption below 2.9mA at 0dBm. This extends battery life by three compared to non-Atmosic based beacons. The lifetime can be extended even further if the device is just activated on movement, detected by the additional ultra-low power accelerometer.

hard&softWERK assumed complete ownership of the blukii product family in 2023 from Schneider, taking charge of its development, production, and distribution.

The longer battery life and compact design aims the beacon at applications such as asset tracking, indoor navigation, movement or activity detection and temperature monitoring. The beacon’s ability to operate uninterrupted for extended periods of time is especially important for hard-to-reach locations in enterprises and industrial environments.

“Our new beacon meets the three key criteria companies are looking for in IoT devices: a sustainable solution that is low maintenance and cost-efficient,” said Matthias Schneider, CEO at hard&softWERK, which produces the blukii brand devices.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen a huge demand for Atmosic’s ultra-low-power wireless technology in asset tracking applications, since long battery life and uninterrupted operation are essential for these types of applications,” said David Su, CEO at Atmosic. “blukii’s beacon is ideally suited to meet this demand, along with the growing interest in sustainable solutions for activity detection, environmental monitoring, navigation, and a variety of other IoT use cases.”

The blukii manager system and the configurator app provide robust tools for companies to seamlessly manage and configure fleets of beacons. Companies can deploy the beacons directly or make design changes such as adding acceleration features and a temperature sensor with a product customization feature. Updates over-the-air are also possible once beacons are already in use.
