At the beginning of the next decade, HERE’s high-precision map is intended to contribute to increased safety and greater comfort for the driver and passengers. The two agreements with Daimler and BMW are the first commercial contracts that HERE has concluded with car manufacturers to bring the HD Live Map into production vehicles.

HERE has developed the HD Live Map to provide update capabilities. This means that the map reflects dynamic changes in the street scene almost in real time and can update itself accordingly. In this way, accordingly equipped vehicles can actively react to changing traffic situations – for example, in the event of a road blockage, they can change to the free lane at an early stage and adjust the speed to the situation.

Thanks to the vehicle sensor data, it is possible to continuously update the HD card. The large number of vehicles that supply data is crucial for high-quality and valid information. HERE uses a wide range of sensor data from car manufacturers to implement real-time map updates. In order to guarantee the necessary navigation security for autonomous driving cars, HERE HD Live Map continuously publishes map updates via an innovative validation process, which detects and reports deviations from the published data within a closed circuit.

“The BMW Group has around ten million networked vehicles on the road. Since 2015, our vehicles equipped with the appropriate sensors have been collecting real-time information relevant to mobility. For example, the BMW fleet already recognizes dangers or speed limits and supplements the over-the-air map with this highly relevant information,”says Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President Electronics BMW Group.

Ola Källenius, member of the Board of Management at Daimler responsible for Group research and the development of Mercedes Benz brand cars, made a similar statement.  “Centimetre-accurate maps, which depict reality almost in real time, are a necessary basis for autonomous driving. With the new HD Live Map and its continuously growing detail information, we are taking a big step towards autonomous driving,” said Källenius.

According to HERE, the HD Live Map is more accurate than any other map available today for navigation systems. It also receives frequent updates as it can access data from a growing number of partners in the automotive industry.

By the end of this year, the HD Live Map will cover more than 1 million kilometers in North America and Europe. This includes a decimetre-accurate image of the road network with lanes and standpoints, lane markings and centrelines and speed limits, as well as a comprehensive data layer with objects and obstacles at the roadside for locating vehicles.

In addition to Audi, BMW, Daimler and a number of other OEMs and automotive Tier One companies as well as chipmaker Intel are joint owners of HERE Technologies, a former business unit of telecom technology company Nokia.
