Bosch develops ECUs for fuel cell vehicles

The Fuel Cell Control Unit (FCCU) introduced at Mobilitec is based on volume hardware proven in automotive applications. Bosch Engineering developed a new software custom made for fuel cell systems that also can be used in stationary applications. Serving multiple system configurations, the software contains control algorithms for hydrogen, air and cooling agents. Thus, it maps a host of operating strategies and helps to reduce energy consumption.

The electrification of off-highways vehicles in general is driven by the exhaust gas legislation for combustion engines of more than 56 kW (EU stage IV as well as US Tier 6 Final). In off-highway application such as forklifts, lifting platforms municipal mobile working machines and airport vehicles, electromobility is increasingly a factor; hydrogen fuelling stations are already in operation on many airports, adding to the acceptance of such vehicles.

Bosch’s FCCU will be first utilised within the InnoROBE project (Innovative On-board energy converter). In this project which is funded in part by the German federal research ministry, a fuel-cell system is used as the energy source in a baggage tug.
