Bosch expands fuel cell activities in China
Bosch Hydrogen Powertrain Systems, as the joint venture is called, will develop, assemble and market fuel cell systems for the Chinese market.
According to forecasts by the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE), more than one million vehicles with fuel cell drive systems could be registered in China as early as 2030. Bosch Hydrogen Powertrain Systems aims to supply all Chinese vehicle manufacturers with fuel cell systems. The components required for this, such as fuel cell stack, air compressor with power electronics, and control unit with sensors, are supplied by Bosch mainly from its plant in Wuxi. Small-series production will start there this year. Also before the end of 2021, a test fleet of 70 Qingling trucks equipped with the Fuel Cell Power Module from Bosch will hit the road. The market launch of the fuel cell system is planned for 2022/2023.
Bosch is contributing its expertise in fuel cell systems to the joint venture. As a premium manufacturer, Qingling has the complete portfolio – from light to medium to heavy trucks and contributes its years of experience in the Chinese truck market. “China is the most important growth market for electromobility,” says Bosch board of management member Stefan Hartung. “Especially for large, heavy vehicles that travel long distances, the fuel cell offers clear advantages over the battery-electric drive.”
