Bosch up as ST slips in MEMS manufacturer ranking
Yole estimates the market was worth US$12.1 billion in 2020 up about 2 percent from 2019. However, after relatively weak 2019 and 2020 Yole is forecasting the market will grow by 11 percent in 2021 to reach $13.4 billion. A compound annual growth rate of about 7 percent would take the market to a value of about $18.2 billion in 2026.
The traditional MEMS markets will continue to grow steadily but there are higher growth opportunities in audio with MEMS microphones and speakers, in inertial MEMS, and in augmented and virtual reality for optical MEMS.

The top ten ranked MEMS manufacturers were responsible for $6.5 billion in combined revenues, more than half of the total market. It is notable that there was some big differences in annual growth in 2020 with players in new markets showing better than average growth and some manufacturers in older markets losing sales. Those with high exposure to automotive markets suffered due to reduced demand and it is notable that Infineon, which is strong in audio, entered the top 10 at the expense of NXP.
Companies related to Covid-19 prevention technologies, such as thermal imaging and sensing or pressure sensors, grew strongly last year. Broadcom and Qorvo grew strongly last year, providing RF MEMS filters for 5G deployment while SiTime’s MEMS timing circuits are replacing quartz crystal timing. Long-time MEMS microphone leader was replaced by Goermicro in 2020.
In terms of audio technologies Yole observed that 3D audio it being promoted by Apple and will likely follow on Android giving rise to increased demand for inertial measurement units to help place the earbud wearer in an audio landscape.

Gas sensing is also on a high growth pass with use in automotive cabin air monitoring and in domestic HVAC and wearables. Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) are finding use in physical button replacement and in haptics.
