Broad-spectrum ultraviolet light detector
Manufactured by ZMDI (Dresden Germany: in the process of being acquired by IDT), the device is connected via an I²C interface to a microcontroller, in standard mode (100 kHz) or fast mode (400 kHz). Other I²C or SMBus devices can be connected to the same interface. The device has a programmable interrupt with hysteresis to respond to events and reduce the microcontroller tasks.
A major application of the device is in smart phones or other mobile devices to enable UVA and UVB light measurements in support of various health care applications or contextual awareness algorithms.
Its features include; very high UVA and UVB light sensitivity; superior visible light and infrared light suppression; stable spectral response over angle of light incidence; large dynamic range; excellent temperature compensation; lowest conversion repeat noise; parallel operation of UVA and UVB sensor; 1.8V logic compatible; programmable interrupt function for UVA or UVB sensor with upper and lower thresholds
The sensor features UVA and UVB detectors in a matrix array arrangement, with configurable output resolution of 13 to 20 bits; it has configurable analogue gain of x1 to x18, linear output code, and has fluorescent light flicker immunity. It operates over – 40°C to +90°C, from 1.7V to 3.6V. Minimum active current at maximum duty cycle is 110 µA typical for single channel, and 130 µA typical for dual channel (proportional to measurement rate). Standby current is 1 µA typical and the device is packaged in a 2.0 x 2.2 x 0.7 mm ODFN.
