The automotive industry is trending towards Ethernet for in-vehicle networking based on IEEE standards driven by the OPEN Alliance SIG to develop a simpler and more powerful Automotive Electrical/Electronic Architecture. Ethernet for in-vehicle networking provides a cost effective cabling solution for the Automotive Industry with low-weight, unshielded twisted pair cable.

"Car manufacturers are starting to deploy Ethernet over unshielded twisted pair cabling inside the vehicles. Therefore it is important for the industry that companies like Cadence provide design and verification IP that will enable the ecosystem to develop Ethernet-based products for in-vehicle communication,” said Ian Riches, Director Global Automotive Practice, at Strategy Analytics.

The Cadence MAC Design IP speeds development of automotive Ethernet-based integrated circuits. In addition, Cadence Ethernet VIP customers can automate complex conformance tests of the Automotive Ethernet protocol and take advantage of advanced verification methodologies. Cadence VIP significantly shortens the overall testbench development time resulting in increased verification productivity.

Ethernet – with an automotive-specific Physical Layer – is currently designed into many advanced driver assistance systems, in particular into systems which process video images. In the mean term, automotive suppliers expect that Ethernet could assume the role of an in-car data backbone – supplementing existing technologies used for specific in-car networking tasks, such as LIN, CAN, and FlexRay which also in future vehicle designs will connect specific control units in power train, comfort and body applications, industry experts predict.

Cadence disposes of significant silicon-proven Ethernet IP solutions. Its Ethernet IP is UNH-tested and silicon-proven in high-volume commercial products. As a member of the OPEN Alliance SIG, Cadence was involved in the development of automotive-specific Ethernet from the outset.
