CATL provides battery modules for Daimler Truck & Buses
The electric truck models to be equipped with CATL battery modules include the Mercedes-Benz eActros, Freightliner eCascadia and Freightliner eM2. The battery systems will be assembled in Daimler’s Mannheim, Germany, plant as well as in its plant in Detroit (USA).
The heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz eActros truck with a range of up to 200 km is already in use by customers in Germany and Switzerland as part of the eActros “innovation fleet”. In the USA, the medium-weight Freightliner eM2 and the heavy Freightliner eCascadia are currently undergoing practical tests at customers. Around 150 FUSO eCanter light trucks are already in service in cities around the world, including New York City, Berlin, London, Paris and Lisbon.
Daimler did not elaborate on the volume of the supply contract. However, as these are very large battery packs, they are likely to cost many billions of euros. Last year, Daimler announced that it had already secured more than 20 billion euros worth of battery cells for its electric cars and trucks, however without naming the suppliers. Market watchers believe that the contract at hand is another major step for CATL to become a decisive player in the run-up of global electromobility.
