The software packages from ST, which are available free of charge, contain the resources developers need to comply with the relevant IEC and ISO specifications. ST’s portfolio of more than a thousand STM32 devices and the STM8 microcontroller family, including the automotive-qualified devices of the STM8AF series, is characterized by a wide selection and affordability that, in the chip manufacturer’s opinion, even more expensive special safety MCUs usually cannot compete with.

The STM8A-SafeASIL package contains the documentation required for automotive applications up to ASIL B. Suitable for use in an ISO 26262-compliant software development process, the package helps users to implement the software self-test library required by the STM8AF Safety Manual.

The X-CUBE-STL package, designed for industrial applications, has been certified by TÜV Rheinland according to IEC 61508 SC3 and, in conjunction with the condition of use of the Safety Manual, enables the use of STM32 devices for the implementation of safety functions up to Safety Integrity Level SIL-2 or SIL-3. X-CUBE-STL is immediately available for most STM32 variants. From the 4th quarter of 2020, packages will also be available for the STM32L5 series, the STM32H7 dual core devices and the STM32MP1 series.

Developers of safety-critical household appliances are addressed by the X-CUBE-CLASSB package, which is certified by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) according to IEC 60335-1 and 60730-1 and is offered for the STM32F0, G0, F1, F3, G4, F2, F4, F7, H7, L0, L1, L4 and WB series.

Also available is the STM8-SafeCLASSB package, which enables device designers to benefit from the high efficiency, low cost and low power consumption of the STM8 devices.

The X-CUBE-STL, X-CUBE-CLASSB and STM8-SafeCLASSB packages contain application-independent self-test libraries for central CPU and memory components as well as the necessary safety documentation.

The application of these packages can help developers to overcome technical challenges, accelerate the market introduction and minimize the certification costs.

ST Authorized Partners offer appropriate service and support for each phase of the development cycle – from defining safety requirements, implementing safety diagnostics, testing and validation to product certification. These partners include Embedded Office, Microsoft, Arm, Segger and Wittenstein, all of which offer Safety RTOS for STM32 microcontrollers and microprocessors. In addition, IAR Systems and Arm also offer Functional Safety certified compilers for the STM8 and STM32 families, while Embedded Office, Hitex, innotec, MESCO and NewTec provide software, design and engineering services, reference platforms and training facilities to support customers’ projects.
