Helio Display Materials Ltd. (Oxford, England) has formed a partnership with Haylo Ventures to focus on displays for AR/VR headsets and appointed David Hayes as executive chairman.

Simon Jones, previously CEO, and Mark Verrall, previously chairman, have stepped down from their roles in the company.

Prior to founding Haylo Ventures, Hayes was CEO at AR waveguide company Wave Optics Ltd. (Oxford, England) transitioning it from an R&D-centric organisation to a product business. Wave Optics was acquired by Snap Inc., the company behind SnapChat, for more than US$500 million in May 2021. It was not stated whether, or how much, Haylo Ventures may have invested in Helio.

Helio was founded in 2016 as Heliochrome Ltd. by Professor Henry Snaith of Oxford University and Professor Sir Richard Friend of Cambridge University. It has been developing metal-halide perovskite materials as alternatives to quantum-dot, OLED and direct band-gap materials for displays in an attempt to create brighter displays that consume less power.

The technology is expected to be applicable to the full range of display sizes but under the strategic agreement with Haylo Ventures the company is opting to focus on microdisplays. This is a field where incumbent technology does not have the advantage of economies of scale.

“I am extremely impressed by what the Helio team has already demonstrated, and I believe that Helio’s perovskite platform has unique potential to meet the very high brightness and resolution requirements for micro displays,” said Hayes in a statement. “I have full confidence in our combined team’s ability to create the winning solution for this important new category of displays.”

Helio moved to pilot-scale production of perovskite materials in 1Q24 to support product development and qualification by customers.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the dedication and significant work Simon and Mark have done in bringing Helio to this point,” said Hayes.
