Measuring while charging, that is the concept of the CheckUp tool
The Dutch TNO developed a special charger for bus batteries. The charger, named the ‘CheckUp tool’ measures the health of the batteries while connected to a charging station. The CheckUp tool is a software controlled charger that measures the speed, level and temperature whilst charging. Based on these three indicators the health of the batteries can be measured.
According to the TNO website:
The tool is an important component of Vitalise, the collaborative project with transport operator Arriva Netherlands, Chargepoint, and Heliox Energy. The goal of this project is to extend the lifespan of batteries. A longer effective lifespan of batteries means not only a potentially significant cost saving for users but also a contribution to the sustainability of their operations.
This new tool and measurement method allows the diagnose of the batteries on-site during nighttime charging, without disrupting the daytime operation of the buses – the vehicle will continue to be in service. The data also stays within the company, no 3rd party needs to be involved.
