Wafer supplier AXT Inc. (Fremont, Calif.) has said that its Chinese subsidiary has received export permits to resume shipping gallium arsenide and germanium substrates to certain customers.

China, a leading source of gallium and germanium, announced export control regulations on gallium and germanium materials on July 3, 2023 that were implemented on August 1, 2023 (see China squeezes the West’s access to gallium, germanium).

Since the announcement Beijing Tongmei Xtal Technology Co. Ltd., AXT’s subsidiary in Beijing, China, has been working with the Chinese authorities and has now received its initial export permits. AXT said Tongmei continues to work with the authorities to obtain the permits for additional customers so that it can resume shipping gallium arsenide and germanium substrates to those customers.
