One critical raw material is hydrogen fluoride and South Korean semiconductor manufacturers have reportedly been seeking alternative suppliers to the Japanese. China’s Befar Group Co. has reportedly won orders from South Korean semiconductor manufacturers and will supply hydrofluoric acid, according to reports. Hydrofluoric acid is a solution of hydrogen fluoride in water.

Reportedly Samsung has sent senior executives to Taiwan and to mainland China to seek alternative suppliers for hydrogen fluoride gas, which is used as an etchant.

Japan is a leader in semiconductor materials supply but China has been catching up for several years. Chinese companies have started by supplying their domestic chip market with low- to mid-end materials and now is the right time to upgrade their products and compete more internationally.
