Connected cars require reliable high-performance wireless connectivity. The 88W8987xA is the first IC on the market that combines all the wireless technologies typically used within the vehicle (WiFi, Bluetooth) and externally in V2X communications. In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI), telematics, wireless gateways and state-of-the art security increase cost and complexity in every domain of the cars. Marvell’s new 88W8987xA series of footprint-compatible chips enables OEMs and their suppliers to quickly roll out the desired functions, significantly reducing development effort. The company’s 4th generation automotive radio ICs meets the stringent requirements of the AEC-Q-100 class 2 standard.

The 88W8987xA product family complements Marvell’s previously introduced 88M2112 Automotive Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) transceiver to provide a complete wired and wireless connectivity for the networked car. The 88Q2112 enables 1000BASE-T1 Gigabit Ethernet over a single twisted pair copper cable, making it a lightweight solution for forwarding HD video, audio, and voice over ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and IVI applications.

In addition to supporting the growing IVI requirements and upcoming screen projection technologies, the 802.11p features of the 88W8987xA enable the upcoming National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) / Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards FMVSS) and Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) requirements. To support DSRC as a higher-layer protocol, the chip also supports the IEEE802.11p standard for the layers 1 and 2.

The 88W8987xA is also the first wireless combo IC, the Bluetooth 5 and Bluetooth Low Energy Angle of Arrival and Departure (AoA / AoD) as well as 802.11mc, which allows new applications for car manufacturers using wearables and phones to provide new access, Personalization and vehicle localization services.

The 88W8987xA offers flexibility in system design and is compatible with various host SoCs, hardware HSMs, WAVE (1609.x) stacks and operating systems. 88W8987xA drivers are available for Android, Linux and QNX.
