City University London addresses the growth of sensor systems with new Masters’ degree
These skills are in high demand in both research and product development in a wide range of sectors, including energy, entertainment, healthcare, manufacturing, security, telecoms and transport. Professor Panos Liatsis, Head of City’s Information Engineering and Medical Imaging Group, will lead the course. He says: “The capabilities of digital sensors today mean that they are being deployed in an ever-increasing array of novel applications – from interacting with smart phones to measuring electricity consumption across smart cities.
“There is a lack of training opportunities in the area, however, with existing postgraduate courses focusing on specific sectors such as defence, while undergraduate courses cannot cover the breadth of techniques involved. The new course will tackle this, enabling current professionals to learn the latest thinking and recent graduates to specialise.”
The programme will draw on the knowledge and experience of leading experts and active researchers from City’s Instrumentation and Sensors and Systems and Control Research Centres. This includes several current projects such as: a £200k Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Sencon UK Ltd to develop more accurate quality control sensors for the packaging industry; two Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) projects on sensors and metrology for the health monitoring of structures; and a £1.5m interdisciplinary EPSRC project on the imaging of cancer bio-markers.
Offered both full-time and part-time to accommodate professionals, the course will give students a core understanding of sensor systems and generic signal processing, as well as a choice of modules relating to specific application areas and industries, including signals and information theory, sensor systems, pattern recognition, digital signal/image processing, soft field imaging and metrology.
