Climate change contest looks for smart IoT solutions
In the contest, participants will use QuickLogic’s open source QuickFeather Development Kit and SensiML’s Analytics Studio Toolkit to create a proof-of-concept (PoC) – which should have a written outline, sample code that works, and ideally (but not required) a video demo – of an intelligent IoT edge solution that addresses climate change. The POC should focus on any intelligent IoT device application where edge AI processing transforms sensor data into actionable information – in order to improve awareness, change behavior, or optimize processes to impact climate change for the better.
A few examples of such PoCs include those that:
- Reduce energy consumption
- Provide early warning of wildfire
- Improve the quality of life for emerging countries that continue to use wood burning as a primary fuel source
By providing silicon, software, and development boards as part of an open source environment and delivering those to the development community at large, say the companies, they are offering their technology to the thousands of engineers who have ideas that can help address the issue of climate change. The QuickFeather Development Kit is offered as an ideal platform, which together with the SensiML toolkit, enables developers to add AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities to endpoint IoT applications quickly.
The kit features the QuickFeather board with a small-form-factor board powered by QuickLogic’s EOS S3, an FPGA-enabled Arm Cortex-M4F MCU that is fully supported by the Zephyr RTOS, which is designed for connected resource-constrained devices. Unlike other development kits that are based on proprietary hardware and software tools, say the companies, QuickFeather is based on open source hardware, which is compatible with the Adafruit Feather form factor and is built around 100% open source software (including the SymbiFlow FPGA tools, and Renode emulation environment.)
The SensiML Analytics Toolkit is integrated with the QuickFeather Development Kit and adds the capability for designers to create “smart” IoT applications using AI and AutoML technology. The SensiML tools are designed to make it easy to add sophisticated AI for low-power processors and MCUs without requiring major compute resources or cloud connectivity, making it an ideal development tool for smart endpoint IoT applications.
Interested participants can get started by either applying to win one of 250 free QuickFeather Development Kits or purchasing one directly. Once a POC for the contest has been completed, participants can then submit their projects to the highly qualified panel of judges for evaluation and become eligible for prizes for winning submissions.
Six prizes will be awarded – three for Best Battery Powered Proof-of-Concept and three for Best Line Powered Proof-of-Concept (PoC):

- 2nd Place: $1,000 + SensiML Subscription ($11,000 value)
- 3rd Place: $500 + SensiML Subscription ($10,500 value)
Submissions for the contest will close on March 12, 2021. The contest winners will be announced by Mar 25, 2021.
