CMOS image sensor market growth to soften
The market grew 25 percent in 2019 to reach a value of $19.3 billion but annual growth will reduce in 2020 to 7 percent followed by a slight rebound in 2021 with 12 percent annual growth, the market researcher predicts. This will put the value of the market at $20.7 billion in 2020 and $23.1 billion in 2021.
Yole reckons CMOS image sensors will represent represent 5.1 percent of global semiconductor sales in 2021.
The longer-term growth will soften due to counteracting effects of high volume and reduced average selling prices resulting in a compound annual growth rate over the period 2019 to 2025 of 5.7 percent.
Mobile equipment will remain the most important application for CMOS image sensors but with security and automotive applications rising in significance.
In 2019, Sony was the largest CIS player, with a growing market share of 42 percent. Then Samsung and Omnivision with 21% and 10% market share, respectively. In fourth place, STMicroelectronics has emerged as a competitor in the near infrared sensing space
“The CIS industry has been pushed by a combination of high demand and high prices due to capacity limitation,” said Pierre Cambou, imaging analyst at Yole, in a statement. “2019 and 2020 saw the combination of high demand for cameras in the mobile market while sanctions on Huawei has been contributing to additional inventories. This raised the industry output to its structural limit, which in turn increased prices by about 10 percent.”
However, demand in 2Q20 was 18 percent below expectations and severely impacted the growth for the whole year, Yole said.
