CMOS image sensors: Sony heads towards 50% market share

The CMOS image sensor market was worth US$21.8 billion in 2023, up slightly from US$21.3 billion in 2022 as the smartphone market struggled but with a better outlook ahead according to Yole Group.
The annual market is expected to be worth US$28.6 billion in 2029, a 4.7 percent compound annual growth rate of 4.7 percent over the period 2023 to 2029. An expansion of product offerings for x-ray, UV, SWIR, polarization and multispectral imaging confirm a trend from simple imaging to electromagnetic spectrum sensing, said Yole.
Sony continues to take market share, moving to 45 percent in 2023 from 42 percent in 2022 (see Sony increases CIS market share as Samsung, Omnivision retreat).

This year the market grab was not at the expense of rivals Samsung and Omnivision, who maintained their share, but at the expense of smaller players such as STMicroelectronics, SK Hynix and Galaxycore.
The image sensors in the automotive sector was growing in 2023 to compensate for smartphone weakness, a situation that may reverse in 2024 although the long-term trend is to add sensors and cameras to vehicles in support of autonomous driving.
“Looking ahead, the automotive image sensor market is poised for substantial growth, forecasted to increase from US$2.3 billion in 2023 to US$3.2 billion by 2029 with a 5.4 percent CAGR,” said Florian Domengie, imaging analyst at Yole Group
By 2024/2025, the Chinese smartphone market is expected to resume growth, with a focus on high-end models. In this scenario, smartphone OEMs like Huawei and Honor are turning to local CMOS image sensor suppliers to avoid geopolitical issues, benefiting Omnivision, SmartSens Technology, and GalaxyCore, observed Yole.
Emerging sensor technology developments have yet to find a killer application but more neuromorphic-style image sensors and metasurface products are anticipated to be introduced in 2024 and 2025.
