Compact automotive chip varistors with high reliability
The miniaturized surge protection components are available in IEC size 1005 (EIA 0402) with dimensions of only 1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 mm3. This means that they are 75 percent smaller than existing products with similar performance. The highly reliable components of the AVRH series are designed for a wide operating temperature range from -55 °C to +150 °C, can withstand contact discharges of 25 kV according to IEC 61000-4-2 and are qualified according to AEC-Q200.
In order to achieve the high reliability required for automotive applications, the new AVRH series uses a special coating technology from TDK. This makes the components suitable for a wide variety of ECUs and bus systems such as LIN, CAN, CAN-FD and FlexRay. The new chip varistors can also be used in systems that use BroadR-Reach, MOST or automotive Ethernet for communication.
Vehicles are being equipped with more and more additional systems such as ADAS (Advance Driver Assistance Systems) and IVI (In-vehicle Infotainment). Therefore, reducing the size of such systems while increasing their reliability is becoming increasingly important. As a result, ESD and surge protection components must also be further miniaturized and at the same time offer higher reliability. TDK has announced that it will further expand its portfolio of surge protection devices in terms of compactness, operating voltage and capacity to support a wide range of automotive systems.
