Compact drive unit for 48V vehicles
Volabo’s 48-volt concept for the electric drive differs from conventional electric drives. The Intelligent Stator CAge Drive, ISCAD for short, is an electrically safe and cost-effective drive without rare earth magnets. Instead of copper windings in the stator, ISCAD has aluminium rods which can be individually controlled. This means that the drive can be adapted to any load profile and can therefore be used very efficiently, especially in the partial load range.
With the third generation of the ISCAD, Volabo has already reached an important milestone: a fully integrated prototype. For the first time the prototype could deliver 110kW – in a very compact design. With this concept, two 48 volt vehicles were assembled and tested.
Now Volabo has reached the next step towards series production. With the fourth generation of ISCAD, the degree of integration has been further increased. The inverter was technically improved and the high current circuit boards were eliminated. Compared to Generation 3, a 50% reduction in size and mass of the inverter was achieved. With a length of only 33 cm, the entire motor including the associated electronics is very compact. This means that the drive unit can be easily installed on the axis, as we have shown in the example. The new generation also uses fewer components, which makes the inverter both more cost-effective and more robust.
