Developed by Continental’s subsidiary Continental Egineering Services, the compact HUD offers the visualization of information in the driver’s field of vision and thus enables intuitive and safe operation even for this vehicle class. This is particularly important in view of the fact that driving functions are increasingly being transferred from the driver to the vehicle on the way to automated driving, even in sports cars. This makes, for example, driving more comfortable and safer in traffic jams in which the dynamics and agility of a sports car are barely shown to advantage.

What has long been standard in production vehicles of the luxury class, has so far been difficult to implement in vehicles with special installation space requirements, such as sports cars. By optimizing the so-called virtual image size visible to the driver in the windshield and changing the projection distance, the developers at Continental Engineering Services succeeded in halving the HUD’s installation space to around 2 liters. The projection surface was also reduced in size compared to standard models, but the brightness of 10,000 cd/m2 was maintained.

“Our compact head-up display enables high-precision visualization of information on a somewhat smaller projection screen compared to standard vehicles. “With the smaller field of view to the outside, our new development fits the vehicle concepts of most manufacturers,” explains Dr. Christian Trapp, Senior Manager Head-up Displays at Continental Engineering Service.

With a HUD, drivers receive all relevant information directly in their field of vision, exactly where it is needed. The driver’s view remains focused on the driving situation; nevertheless, all important information, such as warning messages or speed, can be read at any time. The HUD is thus a key technology for holistic human-machine interaction and enables safe and convenient communication between people, vehicles and the environment.
