Connected car firm opens Euro HQ in Sweden
Ecarx is a standalone connected car subsidiary of Chinese car maker Geely, which also owns Volvo, Proton, Polestar and Lotus Cars.
The EU HQ at Uni3, Geely’s new campus for innovation in Gothenburg, aims to take advantage of European skills to build experienced R&D and management teams. These will use Ecarx vehicle chipsets and intelligent cockpit technology with global partners to ‘internationalise’ the ECARX Automotive Service (EAS). The technology will include a connected car localisation service as well as working with the upcoming Lynk & Co car brand and other brands under the Geely Holding Group.
The newly appointed Managing Director of Ecarx EU is Peter Rogbrant who has a background spanning over 20 years in the automotive, technology and gaming industry. He joins from Geely subsidiary CEVT (China Euro Vehicle Technology) and automtoive electronics specialist Veoneer.
“A lot of excellence has been achieved so far by Ecarx in its four years’ development. Today Ecar has a leading position in the China market with a strong and unique ecosystem build-up, leading HMI, connectivity and infotainment area. The establishment of ECARX EU is the natural next step to continue to grow, explore new business opportunities and engage the best talents in industry,” said Peter Rogbrant.
“Ecarx EU HQ and product development centre is the second move of our globalization strategy after successfully providing services for Proton in Southeast Asia. For the EU market, we are going to deliver world-class performance of our platform and technologies. And it will be a breakthrough for a Chinese technology corporation going into the global automotive market,” said Ziyun Shen, ECARX founder and CEO. The company has so far raised $200m in funding with the last yround of $194m in October 2020.
Ecarx has a joint venture with ARM China called Hubei Siengine Technology in Wuhan that is developing a series of chips for automotive digital cockpit, navigation and infotainment applications based around ARM cores and the Arteris network on chip IP. This will run the GKUI software designed for Geely by Ecarx that already has over 2.3 million 4G users.
