Connected drones find new roles in smart cities

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (aka drones) were equipped with LTE mobile radio dongles, GPS and access modules for telemetry data. The IT infrastructure in use contained computing components to monitor airspace, view and control drone flight paths and to transfer telemetry data as well as establish dynamic no-flight zones. The UAV pilot controlled the drones through an app with UTM interface.

According to Nokia, the LTE cellular communications technology is ideal for this type of application. “LTE enables innovative high-bandwidth services for the telecom industry and beyond. Nokia’s UTM concept for operators and authorities can enable the safe operation of drones as part of the development of smart cities”, said Joachim Wuilmet, head of Nokia’s Customer Marketing and Communications for Middle East and Africa.

With the demo, Nokia continues its strategy of integrating connected drones into innovative applications such as (telecommunications) towers inspection, radio planning and traffic management.
