Alps Alpine Co. Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) has started selling its AirInput product, which supports both touch and touchless input based on capacitive sensing.

Capacitive touch panels have limitations associated with wet touch and glove-wearing that the AirInput panel addresses by allowing non-contact operation.

The AirInput is suitable for 15.6-inch wife general purpose displays and comes in the form of an addressed overlay. It provides x and y coordinates and a value for proximity in the z direction.

Typical applications include:

  • Input for control displays on food processing machines and other industrial equipment
  • Input panels on control monitors for commercial kitchen and cooking equipment
  • Input panels on control monitors for housing installations and public computer terminals
  • Input panels on control monitors for medical and testing systems

The panel dimensions are 368mm by 220mm with a viewable area of 346.6mm by 195.6mm. The weight is 0.45kg and current consumption is 120mA. Alps Alpine also provides control software suitable for the Windows operating system.
