The rise of ambient technology experiences, powered by AI
The ongoing evolution of technology, driven by artificial intelligence (AI), is poised to manifest in a manner that may happen largely unnoticed. This phenomenon, known as “ambient computing”, will present as seamless digital experiences tailored to individual preferences, needs, and surroundings. This signifies a paradigm where technology operates in the background, effortlessly integrating into our daily lives.
Ambient experiences are created by technologies that seamlessly blend into our daily routines. These experiences leverage AI to integrate various services, data, and intelligence, and then autonomously tailor the output to people’s preferences based on previous learning and the particular context. However, from a computing perspective, this requires heightened power and performance, more advanced AI, and more robust security measures.
Central to these ambient experiences are sensors and smartphones that have the capabilities to provide the contextual awareness crucial for facilitating these experiences, while also safeguarding the user’s privacy.
In the near-term, ambient experiences could be enabled by AI-powered digital assistants on the smartphone that proactively adapt to users’ locations and needs without explicit commands. For example, home environments will be automatically adjusted based on the person’s preferences as soon as they walk into the home.
The integration of IoT devices via sensors extends to various domains, from enhancing home environments to optimizing office spaces and healthcare facilities. Wearable devices, like smartwatches, also contribute to ambient experiences through collating health data to inform personalized recommendations.
Urban environments, that are evolving into “smart cities,” are already serving as test beds for ambient experiences, fostering connected infrastructure that responds to real-time conditions. Public transportation is a great example, with sensors optimizing passenger experiences through real-time information, and potentially evolving into personalized guidance systems.
There will also be brand new ambient experiences that essentially give people a “digital sixth sense.” These involve the amplification of senses where people will see, hear and even smell or touch at levels never seen before. This has life-changing implications for those suffering from sight or hearing disabilities.
The ambient evolution presents multifaceted challenges, which requires advancements in hardware, software, and security measures. Arm’s role is providing a common, pervasive computing foundation that already addresses these challenges, delivering high performance, low power capabilities, as well as advanced security and AI across a diverse range of technologies.
Ambient computing heralds a subtle yet profound shift in technological evolution, promising personalized, context-aware experiences seamlessly woven into people’s daily lives. As an increasing number of ambient experiences continue to unfold, addressing computing complexities and privacy concerns will be imperative to realizing its full potential across all of the world’s technology touchpoints.
