This number refers to the 7th generation alone. Nevertheless, earlier PFI generations are also still being manufactured around the world. Currently the 9th generation has been introduced into the market while generation number 10 is under development, designed to meet the requirements of turbocharged and downsized engines with a combination of direct injection and PFI. The 7th generation has been that successful (and according to Continental continues to be) because it serves a broad mix of application needs. "For many applications this generation still offers an attractive combination of best price and clean technology", explains Gunnar Lowack who oversees the Injector Product Line in Continental’s Engine Systems Business Unit. Since the 7th generation injector is a modular product, engine developers can chose between three body and nozzle lengths options to match the injector dimension to the geometry of the intake manifold. Another benefit is the wide choice of potential spray patterns which under the bottom line enables engine designers to control hydrocarbon emissions.

The 7th generation PFI injectors is currently manufactured in Newport News (USA), Pisa (Italy), and Changchun (China).
