Emitec is said to be a leading vendor of exhaust gas treatment technologies. The company with headquarters in Lohmar near Bonn (Germany) develops, manufactures and sells metal carrier catalytic converters, components for particle filters and dosing modules for selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The company runs subsidiaries in Europe, the US and Asia and employs some 900 persons. The SCR technology reduces the NOx emissions by injecting a watery solution of urea into the exhaust gas system; experts believe that the technology will gain significance in future vehicle generations: More stringent regulations for exhaust gas will force manufacturers of diesel cars to equip their vehicles with SCR systems. Many heavy trucks are already equipped with such a system.

Continental already has activities in exhaust gas treatment across several business segments. The SCR injection systems with sensors, injectors, control units and software today are developed and produced by Continental’s powertrain business unit whereas the ContiTech division contributes heatable pipes and Emitec the dosing modules. The acquisition will generate synergy effects and enable Continental to offer complete emission reduction systems and cover a larger part of the value chain from configuration and integration to application and calibration.
