Continental and EasyMile will jointly prepare an Autonomous Driving (AD) technology for testing with the aim of achieving the safe use of such vehicles on public roads in the Singapore Municipality. During the celebrations to mark the launch of the R&D initiative and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), guests were able to get an impression of driverless mobility by driving the electrically powered development platform CUbE (Continental Urban Mobility Experience) based on the Easy-Mile software.

With its advanced regulatory kit for AD, Singapore has the flexibility to quickly adapt the regulatory framework to support the rapid pace of AD technology development without compromising public safety. Autonomous systems play an important role in their plans to improve Singapore’s transportation system. According to Singapore authorities, AD has the potential to serve the “last mile” between private homes and public transportation hubs.

In particular, driverless vehicles are seen as links between home and the nearest public transport access point. A good connection should contribute to the overall efficiency and performance of transport. To make progress here, Singapore has started an intensive dialogue with leading industrial companies. The aim is to develop driverless solutions as quickly as possible to complement efficient urban mobility.

With the signing of the MoU and the deployment of the team, EasyMile and Continental expand an ongoing collaboration that began in 2017 when Continental acquired a minority stake in the French company. “Once our new R&D team is up and running, our long-term goal will be to provide an autonomous vehicle for Singapore’s roads based on Continental’s and EasyMile’s global expertise, creating safe driverless solutions,” says Kien Foh Lo, Managing Director of Continental Automotive Singapore.
