Continental joins forces with Pioneer for infotainment developments

As part of the collaboration, Continental will integrate Pioneer’s comprehensive infotainment subdomain into its high-performance computer platform for vehicle cockpits. The automotive supplier hopes that this will bring long-term benefits for its customers: The integration of such extensive software packages into a complex overall solution such as Continental’s Cockpit High Performance Computer (HPC) is intended to offer vehicle manufacturers greater flexibility in the development of cockpit systems. Such flexible solutions are essential for future developments in order to meet the trend towards a centralized vehicle architecture as well as the increasing software complexity and the rapidly growing range of cockpit functions, Continental said in a release.

In the future, this will increasingly require the strategic cooperation of multiple specialized partners. By integrating the entire infotainment domain into a holistic system, Continental and Pioneer are demonstrating what such collaboration models can look like in the area of centralized cockpit systems. Pioneer is one of the specialists in the field of car entertainment and makes this expertise available for the collaboration. In addition to Cockpit HPC, Continental is contributing its significant integration know-how to the partnership. The cooperation also reflects the growing importance of an individual and customizable digital user experience for vehicle users.

“Continental’s broad knowledge of instrument clusters and vehicle safety systems complements our expertise in car entertainment, which we have gained through more than forty years of global experience in both the OEM and aftermarket sectors,” said Naoto Takashima, Head of Mobility Products Company at Pioneer Corporation. “Both components are essential ingredients for a new level of human-machine interface that enables safe and intuitive operation for increasingly comprehensive functions. Continental and Pioneer have already begun sharing expertise.

Until now, the vehicle’s HMI has consisted essentially of two separate segments that were implemented on two displays: the actual driver information in the instrument cluster and the center console display, which is aimed at both the driver and front passenger. The infotainment part was concentrated on the center console display. As information, services and functions become increasingly interlinked, this architecture is no longer ideally suited. Instead, with the cross-domain solution of the Cockpit HPC, all displays and control elements in the vehicle merge into a holistic user interface.

Content can thus be displayed independently of display limits and arranged individually by the user. In potentially critical situations, this ensures that only the information that is really needed at that particular moment is displayed with priority. This counteracts excessive demands or distraction of the driver. In the automated driving mode, on the other hand, the driver also has access to all services and apps that are otherwise only available on the passenger side. This comfort and safety gain are made possible by an electronic architecture that allows completely different systems and operating systems to be separated on one hardware and continuously updated or supplemented. To achieve this, it must be possible to host software from many sources on a single high-performance computer, independent of hardware. The two partners are using this flexibility of the Continental cockpit platform for their cooperation.
