Continental outsources head unit functions to the cloud
The outsourcing of functions to the cloud has advantages for vehicle manufacturers and suppliers: Thus, the system is always up-to-date; new functions can be added at any time and purchased in the after-sales markets.
Continental’s Cloud Terminal uses HTML5 technology, which enables platform-independent development of applications as well as display on various displays with different resolutions. This means that the system can be supplemented with new functions and micro-services even after the start of series production and thus be kept up to date at all times. This is made possible by the use of common Internet of Things (IoT) approaches and techniques as well as through open protocols and standard interfaces such as MQTT or the REST interface.
“This will make the Cloud Terminal accessible to a broader developer community”, explains Karsten Michels, head of systems and pre-development at Continental’s Interior Division. The company plans to organize a hackathon at the IAA 2017 in Frankfurt to familiarize developers with this approach and increase the dynamics in this environment. Developers from all content areas are invited to the event to develop new applications and to enter into a direct exchange of ideas. The task: The developers have to program a service-oriented vehicle app for direct integration into the Cloud Terminal during the two-day event (on September 20 and 19, as well as on September 20 and 21). There are no limits as regards to the content. The developments use the open Web Application Messaging Protocol (WAMP), which allows developers to use a broad wide variety of programming languages. Only the final application for integrating the app into the cloud terminal needs to be created in HTML5.
