Continental relies on Xilinx expertise for auto-driving computer platform
The Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit enables customers to introduce automated driving to the market faster because it is based on the Open Computing Language (OpenCL) interface of the Khronos Group, an industry consortium committed to creating open standards in the multimedia sector. The platform offers heterogeneous data processing with a main processor (Central Processing Unit, CPU), a graphics processing unit (Graphics Processing Unit, GPU), a digital signal processor (Digital Signal Processor, DSP) and now also with Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in cooperation with Xilinx. This enables developers to optimize their software with the appropriate processing engine or to create their own hardware accelerators with the programmable logic of Xilinx. The result is the greatest possible freedom in performance optimization with the lowest latency and low power dissipation without having to forego the possibility of freely shifting software algorithms via the integrated chips.
Continental’s Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit enables automotive engineers to develop their own differentiated solutions for machine learning and the fusion of sensor data. The company has chosen Xilinx technology because, according to Karl Haupt, head of Continental’s Driver Assistance Systems business unit,” it offers the flexibility and scalability required to meet the ever-changing and new demands of fully automated and autonomous driving”. For Continental, the Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit represents a central component for the implementation of the functional safety architecture and at the same time host for the comprehensive environment model and the driving functions required for automated driving.
The Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit is a scalable product family for assisted and automated driving that meets the highest safety requirements (ASIL D). The ECU will provide numerous communication interfaces for the necessary data flow. The first product of this family is a module for driver assistance systems, which offers a cost-optimized solution to connect environment sensors and actuators, supplemented with central intelligence, safety and security. The control unit for automated driving is the next development to follow. It includes a powerful computer that meets the requirements of highly automated driving, with a focus on the specific digital structures for a comprehensive environmental model, ASIL D and real-time performance.
