Continental shows head-up displays for trucks and buses
Head-up displays will increase traffic safety, because drivers can see relevant information regarding navigation, vehicle status and traffic situation within field-of-sight, without taking the eyes off the road. Continental plans to offer two basically different HUD implementations to its customers: For the North American Market, it will offer a windscreen HUD, for the rest of the world, a so-called combiner HUD will be offered. The windscreen type suits particularly for the relatively flat standing windscreens in commercial vehicles in North America. Therefore the content of the HUD is projected directly against the windscreen. In other parts of the world, in contrast, the windscreens of commercial vehicles are rather steep. Therefore it is not possible to project the HUD content against the windscreen. Therefore, a transparent screen (the combiner) is located between driver and windscreen, and the data are projected against this screen.
“We regard the head-up display as an important element of the future dialogue between human and machines for more safety”, explained Michael Ruf, general manager of Continental’s Commercial Vehicles business unit. “Through this dialogue, the driver is informed early about the driving maneuvers the vehicle is planning in autopilot mode”.
