Continental teams up with Nexteer for motion control systems
Germany-based Continental AG and Nexteer Automotive (Saginaw, Michigan) agreed to launch a joint venture that will focus on developing electronic steering, braking and motion control systems as well as actuators for automated driving. It will combine Continental’s portfolio in automated driving and braking systems with Nexteers steering and driver assistance technology to bring such systems faster to the markets.
“This motion control project will speed Nexteer’s and Continental’s progress in automated driving and provide a contribution to robust driving dynamics and safety”, said Frank Lubischer, STO and Chief Strategy Officer of Nexteer Automotive. “Our team will drive the integration of braking and steering systems, drive the development of better X-by-wire systems and devise joint safety architectures and strategies for redundant systems that offer operational safety”.
Both parent companies will hold 50% of the JV shares. In operational terms, the focus of the yet unnamed JV will be on R&D activities with particular emphasis on quick evaluation, design and prototype manufacturing.
The company will officially be launched in Q1/2017. However, since the deal is still rather new, no management members have been appointed yet. Likewise, the partners have not yet made a decision as to the seat of the new company. However, it can be expected that it will be located in the state of Michigan, sources familiar with the process said.
