Controller chip accelerates Ethernet TSN
The new R-IN32M4-CL3 communication module from Renesas has been developed for use in Industrial Ethernet networks. It supports CC-Link IE Time Sensitive Networking (TSN), a communication standard for next generation Ethernet TSN technology.
As one of the first controllers for CC-Link IE TSN, the R-IN32M4-CL3 meets the demanding specifications of this standard. This includes a time synchronization accuracy of less than one millionth of a second between applications and a guaranteed data exchange within specified time intervals. With its TSN support, the device accelerates applications such as AC servos, actuators and vision sensors, as well as remote I/O that require extremely responsive control.
This enables users to implement extremely fast and highly precise motion control. In addition, TSN enables seamless interaction between IT networks and OT networks, i.e. between operating IT and factory floor electronics. This allows product models or production quantities to be changed in real time. At the same time, flexible support for the production of different product types in different quantities is possible. The overall productivity of the factory can thus be increased.
“As one of the most important technology players, Renesas has been actively involved in CLPA since the standard was introduced,” comments Masaki Kawazoe, Director of the CC-Link Partner Association. “I am very pleased that Renesas is using its Industrial Ethernet technology to be one of the first vendors to provide ICs with support for CC-Link IE TSN. This will further accelerate the development of CC-Link IE-TSN compatible applications and contribute to the increased use of IoT in intelligent factories.”
In addition to driver software, Renesas will also provide TCP/IP protocol software, CC-Link-IE-TSN protocol software, and the CC-Link-IE-Field protocol software essential for developers. Tessera Technology Inc., one of Renesas’ partner suppliers, will offer an evaluation board and Renesas will provide a launch guide that will enable users to quickly enter industrial application development and take advantage of the new technology.
The R-IN32M4-CL3 includes the Renesas R-IN engine, a Gigabit Ethernet PHY and 1.3 MB on-chip RAM to support high-speed transmission of large amounts of data without the need for real-time operating system software or external components. This reduces development complexity and effort.
The R-IN engine is based on an Arm Cortex-M4 core with FPU, real-time operating system accelerator and Ethernet communication accelerator. Implementing real-time operating system processing in hardware reduces CPU load and enables higher processing speeds.
The R-IN32M4-CL3 also supports the existing CC-Link-IE field network protocol. The new IC can be used in existing network products and extends their capabilities with next-generation network functionality through simple software changes.
