Cooperation tackles seamless transition from simulation to real testing

Before a car can get from the drawing board to production, one thing above all is necessary: Testing, testing and more testing. A large part of this testing is done on the computer – as a simulation. These simulation scenarios are becoming increasingly complex and extensive. That’s why simulation software provider IPG Automotive GmbH and technology company iMAR Navigation GmbH are now pooling their expertise in the areas of simulation and real-world driving tests. The goal is to offer a powerful and holistic tool chain for scenario-based testing. The bottom line is to make vehicle development and approval processes more time and cost efficient.

The complexity of vehicle testing in the field of automated driving continues to increase: The number of test cases is rising continuously, and the test requirements are changing from simple tests with single objects to scenario-based testing with multiple interacting participants. To this end, standardization organizations and legislation have published guidelines for merging simulation and real-world testing. Against this background, the use of an automated tool chain, which is able to counter the immense amount of work and to enable a seamless transition from simulation to real testing, makes sense.

iMAR Navigation, a pioneer of real-world scenario-based testing applications, and IPG Automotive, a leading provider of innovative simulation solutions for vehicle development, have identified the missing interface between simulation and testing on the proving ground and developed a holistic tool chain that combines both testing approaches. In application, it enables a fundamental optimization of test procedures – errors are reduced, the test site is optimally utilized, and time and costs are saved.

The toolchain includes scenario planning, test runs with different parameters of arbitrary NCAP tests as well as complex scenarios in the simulation software CarMaker from IPG Automotive. The configured scenarios and test runs are transferred directly to the iARGUS-CMD software of iMAR’s Proving Ground Control Center. This software is responsible for the real-time control of all moving and static test entities such as the vehicle-under-test, traffic simulation vecicles, soft crash targets, robotic vehicles, traffic lights or barrier systems.

The exchange of scenario description between both tools is based on iSCAML – iMAR’s Scenario Advanced Meta Language – which is part of the future ISO 22133 standard. In addition, an OpenX-to-iSCAML converter is also integrated into the tool chain, which enables the import of OpenScenario files. For test data analysis, the common toolchain also holds standardized interfaces to transfer test data to any data analysis software after test execution and to play it back to simulation and/or control center software.

With the new toolchain, IPG Automotive and iMAR Navigation aim to provide users at vehicle manufacturers and tier-one suppliers with a tool that can be used to prepare and execute vehicle tests much more efficiently, validate simulation results, and comply with current regulations and standards such as AFGBV, ISO 22133 or ASAM.
