CoorsTek expands with Philips ceramics unit for 200mm GaN-on-Si
Last year Colorado-based Coorstek acquired Covalent materials, the spin off of Toshiba Ceramics in Japan, and as a result now provides GaN-on-Si epiwafers for power devices and integrated circuits (ICs) as well as aluminium nitride (AlN) substrates for hybrid circuits and engineered ceramic components for semiconductor processing equipment. These are being demonstrated for the first time at next week’s International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and ICs (ISPSD) in Prague in the Czech Republic.
“The latest gallium nitride-on-silicon technology helps customers achieve higher device manufacturing yields and breakdown voltages based on lower defect densities and leakage current,” said Dr Jun Komiyama, R&D Manager at CoorsTek. “The shift from 150 mm to 200 mm diameter GaN-on-Si process is also improving the economics for power electronics in electric and hybrid automobiles, solar photovoltaic inverters, RF and microwave power, and more.”
The terms of the acquisition of the Philips ceramic operation in Uden were not disclosed, but the deal extends its footprint to a dozen European manufacturing locations in the Czech Republic, England, Finland, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, and Sweden.
As a part of Philips, the Uden site supported its global lighting business. In addition to securing an exclusive, long-term agreement to supply Philips Lighting, CoorsTek will use the site to serve a broader set of customers and applications beyond lighting, including automotive, electronics, and medical.
