The average design cost for all SoCs across all geometries is forecast to increase to $5.3 million by 2023, which would seem to imply that leading-edge design will be considerably more.

A couple of other facts from Semico are: that the number of ‘first-time-right’ designs has dropped at every process geometry since the 180nm node. And that silicon design costs at the 7nm node for an advanced performance multicore SoC are projected to be 23 percent higher than at the 10nm node.
