Cree issued a voluntary recall of its tube-shaped T8 LED which designed to replace traditional two pin fluorescent bulbs in common commercial and office fixtures. The recall in the USA follows Cree receiving four reports of the lamps, which were manufactured in China, overheating and melting. No injuries have been reported.
The potential fire hazard appears to be as a consequence of electrical resistance between the spring contact and the printed circuit board (PCB) causing over-heating due to electrical arcing. The printed circuit board can overheat and cause the LED T8 lamp to melt, posing a burn hazard.
