The ICE blocks support peak shaving capabilities and includes a new switch that alllows power to be intelligently distributed across racks depending upon need and historical usage patterns. It recovers lost power and improves efficiency of the current power infrastructure by atomatically allocate power availability in real-time to racks and branch circuits protecting mission critical computing needs. This stores power in local batteries on the racks at times of lower compute requirements to provide a boost at peak times. This evens out the power requirements and allows the cooling of the data centre to be more accurately optimised. This in turn frees up space for more compute racks.
CUI and Virtual Power Systems (VPS) announced a partnership last year to combine the VPS ICE technology with power supplies for elastic power in data centre.
The initial trial evaluations are being conducted by three key data centre operators. One, a Fortune 500 company, has its own data centre infrastructure in multiple US states serving millions of consumer transactions and financial product portfolios. It used the peak shaving to install additional computing racks in its existing data centres and new data centres under construction for the same power budget.
The second customer is a top-tier data centre hardware provider and is evaluating the technology for peak shaving.
The third customer is one of the largest providers of technology in the world, providing a backbone for all data centres. It is evaluating the ICE Block/VPS combination of technologies as a platform it will include in the solutions provided to its customer base. The products are expected to move into full production later this year.
“We are excited about the recent installations and the technical validation these deployments are bringing. We believe that this is a major step in the traction of this disruptive technology,” said Matt McKenzie, president of CUI. “We are looking forward to demonstrating further the advantages of the ICE platform with many more customers in the near future.”
“Virtual Power Systems recently piloted ICE Blocks from CUI at one of the world’s most sophisticated data centres in Salt Lake City,” said Shankar Ramamurthy, CEO of VPS. “CUI was able to take complex high density Lithium Ion Battery chemistry designs and turn them into working products at customer shelves in record time.”
