Deltenna and Octasic demonstrate a tiny UMTS and LTE-ready small cell
WhiteStar is a fully integrated, true SDR, multi-frequency and multi-standard, small cell platform that can operate two standards concurrently through dual TRx 2×2 MIMO paths (TDD and FDD). It provides system integrators with a way to dramatically reduce the time to market of their microcell/small cell products. Such an innovative small cell design is made possible by the flexibility and capacity (64 HSPA+ users in a 10 km cell) of the OCT2224W baseband SoC that runs any cellular PHY and by the software-configurable FARM100 transceiver sub-system designed by Deltenna.
WhiteStar includes a Dual-core ARM® Cortex A9, a Wi-Fi Access Point and GPS-based timing.
WhiteStar will also be integrated into an IP65 rated enclosure complete with a wide input range power supply and a 2-W front end module. The complete solution is extremely power efficient and compact, measuring only 9” by 5” by 4” and weighing less than 5 kg.
Designed to address the rapidly growing small cell basestation market, the OCT2224W SoC ships with a 3GPP PHY software library that offers standards-compliant GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA+ and LTE. Through its partnership with Radisys (formerly Continuous Computing), Octasic also offers a completely integrated protocol stack (Layer 1, 2, 3) through a FAPI-compliant interface between PHY and MAC. This provides OEMs with the advantages of a complete small cell solution while retaining the flexibility to develop their own radio resource management component.
