Cadence, X-Fab, Coventor and Reutlingen University are sponsoring the two-year MEMS Design Contest due to be launched at the DATE exhibition and conference in Dresden, Germany, next week.

The objective of the contest is to encourage engineers to start designing chips that integrate MEMS and mixed-signal blocks using X-Fab physical design kits and EDA tools from Cadence and Coventor, according to information at the DATE website.

The top three designs will be announced at the European version of Cadence’s annual user conference, CDNLive EMEA, in 2018 and the winning design will be manufactured as demonstrator at one of X-Fab’s wafer fabs. It is not clear whether any cash prizes are on offer or whether the prize for the winners is honor and work- and consultancy-in-kind from the competition’s sponsors.

The contest is the subject of an information session to be held at DATE throughout the afternoon of Thursday March 17. Session 11.8 is open to all DATE attendees. In this session Anton Klotz, a university program manager with Cadence is scheduled to explain the rules of the contest.

The competition is open to companies, entrepreneurs, researchers and students from anywhere in the world and will be judged by panel made up of industry executives and academics. The submissions will be judged on the innovation in hardware, novelty of the application and the economic value the design represents.
