Deutsche Telekom incubator targets 5G with low latency prototyping

Edge Computing is a new concept for server computing – and  is located on the edge of the cellular network, near the end user, rather than in a remote, centralized data center. Edge technology combined with 5G has many potential applications in such industries as robotics, autonomous cars, drones, augmented and virtual reality, or the already mentioned Internet of Things.

More than just an enabler for a new wave of consumer digital entertainment services, the capabilities of hub:raum can also be applied to socially responsible purposes, such as real-time low latency interaction between first responders at accident scenes and medical specialists in hospitals to provide immediate patient care. The advent of 5G will open up a series of new transformations and opportunities.

“5G will be a true technological and business revolution. Many industries will be redefined, new industries, products and services will emerge. T-Mobile wants to be the leader of innovative changes in digital services. Together with the hub:raum we want to help companies from all over Europe to work on their own 5G services,” says Andreas Maierhofer, CEO of T-Mobile Polska.

In November this year, hub:raum will support the launch of hub:raum Low Latency Prototyping for future 5G applications in both Krakow and Berlin.


“It’s unique for Europe. Our collaborating companies will have the opportunity to test and develop their services and products before technology will come commercially to the market. This is a powerful market advantage that many companies hope to benefit from,” explains Jakub Probola from hub:raum.

If companies want to join Deutsche Telekom – hub:raum Low Latency Prototyping in testing innovative systems, a program has been launched to address the demand. This will be accompanied by the development of unique Edge Computing technology, which can be used in the development of Internet of Things, virtual reality, robotics and Industry 4.0 solutions.

Low latency is key

After entering the 5G era, it is predicted that autonomic cars will go out into the street and safely drive passengers from point A to point B, informing them about the other major events on the road like traffic jams or fallen trees.

What can be considered as the real breakthrough is low latency in data transmission – video transmissions benefit as it is where the delay will be completely unnoticeable. Fans of VR and AR games will also enjoy immersive and real time gaming experiences due to the capabilities that Edge Computing and later enhanced with 5G brings to the next level.

The hub:raum Low Latency Prototyping program is targeted to mature businesses as well as entrepreneurs or innovators who see the potential and need of low latency networks and computing as the fundaments for 5G capabilities in their projects. It also invites leading technical universities to cooperate with this testing.
