Dialog admits Apple could make PMICs
This is despite the fact that the tone of statement was upbeat saying Dialog expected to continue to supply Apple with PMICs. Dialog also said that it expected 2018 revenues not to be impacted by any change in relationship with Apple, which contradicted rumors that circulated towards the end of last week (see Dialog hit by Apple move to make own PMICs).
The acknowledgement in the statement that Apple could design its own PMICs at some point in the future and that Apple is Dialog’s largest customer apparently was enough to give credence to rumours that Apple was intending to dump Dialog at some point. Dialog’s share price fell by 18 percent repeating a fall of similar size the previous Thursday.
In its statement Dialog had sought to accentuate the positive saying that there is no change in its relationship with Apple at present and that it continues to gain design wins with Apple.
“Although Dialog expects to remain Apple’s main supplier of PMIC designs, Dialog recognizes Apple has the resources and capability to internally design a PMIC and could potentially do so in the next few years,” the statement said and continued: “Dialog does not have reason to believe its current expectations of 2018 Apple business would be impacted by such potential actions by Apple.”
Dialog added that it understood that to maintain its position as Apple’s main PMIC supplier it had to continue to develop technology to meet Apple’s requirements.

Dialog has been a major supplier of PMICs and Apple reportedly accounted for 74 percent of Dialog’s revenue in 2016. Apple has been gradually reducing its reliance on suppliers of chips for use in its iPhones and other consumer electronics. The idea that it is extending that independence from application processors to power management has been around for a while and weighing on Dialog’s share price.
“Dialog intends to continue to closely support Apple in developing and supplying sophisticated next generation power management and mixed signal technology for use in Apple’s products,” the statement concluded.
