The Spanish government has received approval from the Europe Commission for a €81 million subsidy to be given to Diamond Foundry Europe, a subsidiary of Diamond Foundry Inc. (San Francisco, Calif.).

Diamond Foundry has said it is planning to spend US$850 million building a diamond wafer fab in Trujillo, Spain, with support from the EU and the Spanish government. The European Commission said that it has approved €81 million subsidy (about US$85 million) towards a total investment of about €675 million (about US$700 million).

Diamond Foundry has said it plans to begin production of single-crystal diamond chips in 2025 serving both traditional diamond buyers and the semiconductor industries.

Diamond substrates are being investigated for their superior heat conduction properties in power and high-frequency semiconductors with potential in 5G networks and electric vehicles. Diamond’s unique properties also show promise for optoelectronics and quantum computing.

The Trujillo fab will produce synthetic diamond wafers using the company’s plasma reactor technology and will be one of the first industrial projects in the world entirely powered by solar electricity. Diamond Foundry is planning a 120MW solar installation on the land around the wafer fab.
